What cold storage really means for your crypto
When you hold cryptocurrency on an exchange, you are trusting that platform to safeguard your private keys. The difference between a secure exchange and a vulnerable one almost always comes down to one practice: cold storage. Cold storage means the private keys that control your funds are generated, stored, and signed entirely offline, on devices that have no connection to the internet. Because a remote attacker cannot reach a machine that is not online, cold storage eliminates the single largest attack surface in cryptocurrency — the hot wallet. At Quantum Vault, approximately 98% of all customer assets reside in geographically distributed cold storage, with only a small operational balance kept in insured hot wallets to process everyday withdrawals.
Cold storage alone is necessary but not sufficient. A responsible exchange must also let you confirm, independently, that your balance is actually backed by real reserves. That is where proof of reserves comes in. Using a cryptographic data structure called a Merkle tree, an exchange can publish a commitment that lets every individual user verify two things at once: that their specific balance is included in the published total, and that the total published is not inflated. Quantum Vault publishes a fresh Merkle-tree attestation every quarter, audited by an independent third party, so any customer can cryptographically confirm their funds are backed 1:1 without revealing their identity or holdings to the public.
The combination of offline custody and verifiable reserves is what separates institutional-grade infrastructure from a wallet that merely claims to be secure. It is also why cold storage, proof of reserves, multi-signature authorization, and recurring independent audits together form the foundation of trust at Quantum Vault. Whether you are trading Bitcoin, Ethereum, or any of the thousand assets we list, the same custody standard applies: your funds are held offline, fully reserved, and independently verifiable — every single day.
Cold storage by default
The vast majority of customer funds are kept in air-gapped, multi-signature wallets that have never touched the internet, making them unreachable to remote attackers.
Proof of reserves
Quarterly Merkle-tree attestations let every customer cryptographically verify that their balance is fully backed 1:1 by real, reserved assets.
Independent audits
SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, and PCI DSS Level 1 certifications are renewed annually by independent auditors and published for public review.
